Agile 101: Laying the Foundation for Agile Development

If you want a great introduction to Agile Development, then check out this series by VersionOne.

1. Agile Basics   [request recording]

What is Agile? How is Agile different? Why does Agile work? This webcast will explore the origins of Agile, the definition of Agile, how Agile differs from the way you work today and most important why Agile works. This information will then be applied to the business environment today.

The attendee will leave the webinar with the following:

  • An understanding of the Prindipals and Values of Agile
  • Knowledge of the difference of Agile -v- current woring methods
  • An understanding of the beefits of Agile in today’s business environment

2. Breaking the Major Release Habit [request recording]

Are you frustrated with your release schedule? Are you considering moving to more frequent releases or wondering if there are ways to tweak your release schedule? Although the traditional pattern for software releases is to have a major release every 6-12 months or more and minor releases in between, there are many other release patterns to choose from. This session will examine the various factors and options involved, discuss their pros and cons, use examples drawn from a wide variety of companies, and give you the information you need to make an informed choice and then implement it.

3. Selling Agile: How to Get Buy-in from Your Team, Your Customers and Your Managers [request recording]

Are you excited by the potential of agile software development, but find that your colleagues are a bit reticent? Is your whole team ready to dive in, but your business partner is only interested in dipping in a toe—if that? Are you struggling as a project manager, wishing for the right way to help your management see that agile is the way to go? Are you a manager, wishing for the words that will help your teams feel more confident about trying agile? Or maybe you’re wishing you could find a way to convince your clients that there’s a better way to contract for a software development job—without having to do a full-blown detailed design spec up front.

This presentation will look at all of these questions surrounding how to best sell agile in your organization. We’ll focus first on the general idea of a sales pitch, including what to do and what not to do. Then we’ll look at selling agile to the team, to management, to the customer, and to others in your organization. We’ll wrap up with a pointed look at not selling, and instead focus on finding other ways to promote and share agile.

4. The Algorithms and Architecture of Agile vs. Traditional Software Development [request recording]

When considering Agile development, there are three approaches you can use: believe the hype and hope for the best, look for documented ROI studies, or find people that you trust at a company with similar circumstances that have done it successfully and learn from them. But there is another way. This session will examine traditional and Agile development from an architectural and algorithmic perspective to show exactly how and why they work and contrast their differences and similarities. At the end of this session you will have everything you need to draw your own conclusions about the algorithms and architectures of Agile development versus traditional development. If you are already an Agile proponent, this session will give you more material to draw on when discussing the merits of Agile with those that have not yet discovered its benefits.

5. User Story Essentials [request recording]

User stories are an effective means of expressing software requirements, but they’re deceivingly simple and hard to get right. There’s an art and science to user stories. This session focus on providing the knowledge necessary to either get started with stories or refine an existing practice. First, we’ll cover the anatomy of a user story: what makes a good story; who’s the story for; how do we apply estimates; how and when do we specify stories? Having a solid definition and understanding of what makes a good story, we’ll dive into a brief discussion of how stories drive our developer testing and Behavior-Driven Development efforts. We’ll wrap up with a quick discussion of how stories are used to help plan releases and iterations.

6. Agile 101: Basic Measurements [request recording]

Agile teams collect metrics to provide information for coordination and process tuning.  What are some of the basic measurements used in Agile development? How do I make these measurements? How should I use these measurements? What metrics can I use for project analysis?  This webcast will explore these questions and many more along with pitfalls to avoid.

Topics will cover:

  • Understanding the use of metrics in your environment
  • Velocity, Burndown and Burnup
  • Agile Earned Value Management (AgileEVM)

Attendees will learn:

  • Basic Agile metrics
  • How to measure wisely and when to stop measuring
